Space consumption - how much space does a person need to be happy?

Space influences and characterises our lives. Space is everywhere, surrounds us and is in constant interaction with our everyday activities. We work differently in different spaces, spaces influence our behaviour and well-being and create different situations.
Demands on living, working and public space are constantly changing. The amount of living space occupied by one person in Switzerland has risen constantly in recent decades and has doubled in the last 50 years. The construction and operation of space leaves a multiple ecological footprint. This concerns the consumption of resources during construction, operation, maintenance and renovation, as well as mobility.
The consumption of living space is a sign of prosperity. People earn more, have fewer and later children, more leisure time and more money available for housing. Individualised family forms, in which couples live separately and have two infrastructures for themselves and their children, second homes and longer life expectancy also contribute to the increase in living space consumption. Living and working space, but also public space, is an expression of individuality, success and prosperity and goes far beyond the necessary function and benefits.
Does the consumption of large areas of space make us happy? Too much space leads to the accumulation of useless things and the display of achievements, which can also be a burden rather than a blessing in our lives. What does spatial happiness really mean? The location, the room proportions, the acoustics, the light, the relationship to the surroundings, the warmth and coolness, the neighbourhood, the open fire, the roommates, the homely atmosphere, the smell of the materials or the size, surface area, splendour, the technical gimmicks, the materials or the swimming pool?
Remedies for the excessive consumption of space include sensibly planned floor plans and layouts of flats and alternative forms of living such as shared flats, multi-generation houses, densification of living space in properties, multiple room utilisation. Perhaps renting instead of owning will also reduce the consumption of space, simplify earthly life and create space for the spiritual?
Spatial happiness only arises through the (meaningful) utilisation of space, living in and with space. Architectural space has physical and social dimensions and can be perceived with all the senses. Space is valuable and precious and should be well thought out, planned and built.

On May 9, 2025, the Industry Night Regio Basel will take place – a unique event where companies open their doors. Blaser Architekten has taken the initiative and brought together seven companies from the region to provide a joint insight into the diverse aspects of construction projects.
The Hirsacker Foundation is a private foundation based in Liesberg, Canton of Basel-Landschaft. By public mandate, it offers places in "Supported Living" as well as in "Accompanied Day Structuring" specifically for people on the autism spectrum. Founded in 1987, more than 60 employees are currently dedicated to enabling clients to lead self-determined and fulfilling lives. Tailored to individual needs, the services include nature-oriented, manual, and creative activities that take place in a safe and supportive environment, focusing on joy of life, development opportunities, and social inclusion. Maintenance work that has become necessary is now being undertaken by Blaser Architects. This encompasses several properties of the Hirsacker Foundation, particularly the "Riederwald" residential building and the "Hirsacker" area. A first sub-project has already been completed, with other works still pending.
At first glance, the term "corporate architecture" often evokes the notion of uniform, interchangeable buildings with no apparent connection to their respective locations. However, as architects and general planners frequently active in this area, we understand that behind corporate architecture lie complex tasks that demand precision, adaptation, communication, logistical skills, and other challenging competencies. These very challenges make such projects particularly exciting for us...

And yet, our analogue architecture library possesses a unique power of its own. As a tactile archive of architectural history and a source of inspiration for future thinking, it remains a constant presence in our studio – sometimes used more, sometimes less, but always accessible.
Efficient, cost-effective and high-quality: our new-build project in Basel/Binningen with prefabricated façade elements. What convinced us... We are currently working on the construction of a new apartment block (MFH) in Basel/Binningen, where we are in the middle of the shell construction and suggested a kind of modular system to the client, more precisely the use of prefabricated façade elements.
We decided to work with ERNE AG Holzbau, which specialises in prefabricated façade systems. Together, we developed a combination of reinforced concrete ceilings with steel columns and non-load-bearing façade elements for our project. The following advantages drove us to pursue this concept:
A key benefit is the time factor: prefabricated façade elements are manufactured in the factory and can then be assembled on site, which significantly reduces the overall construction time. In addition, you are less dependent on favourable weather conditions, as it is more difficult to work in hail, snow or 35 degrees than under weather-independent conditions in the production hall, where the right tools, materials and expertise are always immediately available.
Founded in 2006, the non-profit foundation Architektur Dialoge (AD) aims to raise public awareness about architecture and urban issues while fostering dialogue between the industry and private users. To achieve this, Architektur Dialoge offers a wide range of events on architecture and building culture, inviting the public to learn more through lectures, guided tours, and workshops. One of these offerings is the Making Of series, which provides insights into craftsmanship and architecture. Hosted by Christian W. Rückblick auf unser Podiumsgespräch im Klybeck Areal am 3. September 2024. Am 3. September 2024 fand im Klybeck Areal ein spannendes Podiumsgespräch statt, das sich mit der Frage beschäftigte, wie die Bauindustrie den Spagat zwischen politischem Mikromanagement und Europäisierung meistern kann. Gastgeberin auf dem Klybeck Areal war Anita Fetz, alt Ständerätin und Verwaltungsrätin der Rhystadt AG. Auf dem Podium waren Hans Peter Wessels, alt Regierungsrat Kanton Basel-Stadt, Gabriela Theus, Geschäftsführerin Immofonds Asset Management AG Zürich sowie Christian W. Blaser, Blaser Architekten Basel. Moderiert wurde das Podium von Manuel Hutter, Verwaltungsrat der Kontur Projektmanagement AG. What actually is... amock-up?Sketches, drawings,floor plans, 3D models - the language used by architectural designers tocommunicate visually is not always easy to understand right away in reality -after all, visualizations often only offer a perspective view and plans, gridsand the like must also be able to be read. And even if digitalization has longsince found its way into the field of construction (planning) and architecture,the implementation of a project and the end result is still a highly analoguematter that involves sensory perception. So what helps to illustrate ideas andpossible projects in the best possible way and to give clients, but also thecontractors, tradespeople and suppliers involved, a comprehensive picture ofwhat the future could look like? Exactly, a mock-up, i.e. a modelrepresentation on a scale of 1:1. The term mock-up has its origins in French(maquette) and means something like preliminary model, sketch or draft.
Auch wir bei Blaser Architekten befinden uns mitten in der digitalen Transformation aller Geschäftsabläufe und können von uns behaupten, dass wir bereits vieles umgesetzt haben. Die Digitalisierung ist aber kein Sprint, auch kein Marathon – viel mehr ein Weg, den wir nicht mehr verlassen werden. Laufend werden neue Tools entwickelt, KI wartet in immer kürzer zu werden scheinenden Intervallen mit neuen Möglichkeiten auf. Das bedeutet, dass wir die digitale Transformation nicht als Prozess verstehen, der nun bald abgeschlossen sein wird, sondern als selbstverständlich gewordener Teil unserer täglichen Aufgaben. Deswegen ist es uns wichtig, diesen Weg aufmerksam zu gehen, was heute möglich ist zu implementieren, aber auch neue Entwicklungen nicht zu verschlafen. Einer unserer Mitarbeitenden ist in diesem Thema besonders zuhause und legt sich dafür ins Zeug.
