Space influences and characterises our lives. Space is everywhere, surrounds us and is in constant interaction with our everyday activities. We work differently in different spaces, spaces influence our behaviour and well-being and create different situations.
Demands on living, working and public space are constantly changing. The amount of living space occupied by one person in Switzerland has risen constantly in recent decades and has doubled in the last 50 years. The construction and operation of space leaves a multiple ecological footprint. This concerns the consumption of resources during construction, operation, maintenance and renovation, as well as mobility.
The consumption of living space is a sign of prosperity. People earn more, have fewer and later children, more leisure time and more money available for housing. Individualised family forms, in which couples live separately and have two infrastructures for themselves and their children, second homes and longer life expectancy also contribute to the increase in living space consumption. Living and working space, but also public space, is an expression of individuality, success and prosperity and goes far beyond the necessary function and benefits.
Does the consumption of large areas of space make us happy? Too much space leads to the accumulation of useless things and the display of achievements, which can also be a burden rather than a blessing in our lives. What does spatial happiness really mean? The location, the room proportions, the acoustics, the light, the relationship to the surroundings, the warmth and coolness, the neighbourhood, the open fire, the roommates, the homely atmosphere, the smell of the materials or the size, surface area, splendour, the technical gimmicks, the materials or the swimming pool?
Remedies for the excessive consumption of space include sensibly planned floor plans and layouts of flats and alternative forms of living such as shared flats, multi-generation houses, densification of living space in properties, multiple room utilisation. Perhaps renting instead of owning will also reduce the consumption of space, simplify earthly life and create space for the spiritual?
Spatial happiness only arises through the (meaningful) utilisation of space, living in and with space. Architectural space has physical and social dimensions and can be perceived with all the senses. Space is valuable and precious and should be well thought out, planned and built.

A large part of our work today is digital and virtual—we design with CAD, enhance plans with BIM data, and visualize projects in 3D. Still, sometimes the tried and true methods prove their worth. Take model making, for example, which continues to play a significant role in architecture. Surprisingly, this might seem counterintuitive given the indispensable tools like 3D renderings and simulations, making physical model making appear almost outdated. Pinterest, digital mood boards, Instagram, ChatGPT and other AI-powered research tools – the number of digital information platforms is vast, and they’ve become an integral part of our daily workflow.
And yet, our analogue architecture library possesses a unique power of its own. As a tactile archive of architectural history and a source of inspiration for future thinking, it remains a constant presence in our studio – sometimes used more, sometimes less, but always accessible.

With the transition to a rotational chairmanship within the board, the foundation is reorganising its structure while continuing its established event series and maintaining a focus on the foundation’s future development.
Participation, collective ownership and self-governance – these three principles form the foundation of housing cooperatives. Our new blog format REVISITED takes a retrospective look at completed projects, offering an assessment of architecture as it is lived over time. We begin with a single-family home in Witterswil, completed in 2012. Situated at the edge of the building zone, the one-storey residence was realised as a densification of an existing plot and includes, in addition to the customary living areas, a slightly recessed studio space. The house was originally occupied by a couple to whom we have returned for a visit 13 years after their move-in.
The topic of green roofs and biodiversity conservation in inner cities has gained increasing importance in recent years and is becoming a key component of sustainable urban planning. As an architectural practice, we regularly engage with this subject, for example through our work on the Stücki Park project on Hochbergstrasse. This provides good reason to take a closer look. In line with our credo “sharing experience,” we aim to gain deeper insights into why urban greening and bird conservation are so important and what role Basel plays in this context. We spoke with two experts on the subject. In the second part of the interview, we exchanged views with Dr. phil. Monika Schaub from the Department of Building Applications, Trees, and Plant Protection.
