In the heart of the Gotthard massif lies the small village of Andermatt, which despite its striking location remained untouched by tourism for a long time. Thanks to a comprehensive tourism initiative by the major Egyptian-Montenegrin investor and developer Samih Sawiris, this has now changed and Andermatt has become an attractive destination for winter and summer visitors. We were also involved in this project and, as architect and general planner, have been responsible for getting the largest flat block there, Haus YARA, off the ground in recent months. Our guiding principle for this project was to combine tradition and modernity in order to create a harmonious whole between contemporary living and traditional architecture. MINERGIE certification, which was officially awarded the week before last, is also part of the concept.

MINERGIE certification, which was officially awarded the week before last, is also part of the concept.
The Swiss MINERGIE quality label recognises energy-efficient construction and renovation and can be awarded in various forms. The label is based on a concept for energy-efficient construction developed in the 1990s by Dr Ruedi Kriesi and Heinz Uebersax, which is now managed and continuously developed by the MINERGIE ASSOCIATION.
The core idea is to promote energy-efficient construction and living with the aim of reducing energy consumption and increasing living comfort and environmental friendliness through certain measures. In addition to purely sustainable aspects, economic factors are also among the reasons why Minergie certification can be of interest to building owners.
The award is essentially based on the following points:
Increasing energy efficiency through good thermal insulation of the entire shell and the use of efficient building technology Integration of renewable energies with the aim of reducing CO₂ emissions Increasing the quality of life through good air quality and noise protection, in our case through controlled ventilation systems Reduction in operating costs Increasing the quality and value of the property thanks to forward-looking and durable construction methods Certification is possible in the Minergie-Standard, Minergie-P and Minergie-A variants and can be supplemented with the ‘Eco’ suffix in each case. Minergie-A is subject to the strictest requirements, meaning that these buildings are virtually energy self-sufficient. Minergie-P is equivalent to a passive house due to its low energy requirements. The standard variant is regarded as the basis and serves to reduce energy consumption and improve comfort through an improved indoor climate. The Eco add-on specifies additional requirements in terms of health and ecology. The appropriate standard can be selected depending on individual requirements (energy efficiency, self-sufficiency or environmental friendliness).
Also interesting: certification to the Minergie standard can be subsidised by the state. Both the federal government and the cantons and municipalities offer funding programmes and subsidies for appropriate construction and renovation. Tax relief may also be available under certain circumstances. The financial subsidies make the initial costs and additional investments required for a Minergie-certified building more economically attractive and serve to actively promote sustainable construction.
In addition to the recently completed project in Andermatt, we are currently also supporting the construction of a detached house in Liesberg, which will also meet the requirements of the Minergie standard (P). For this purpose, we are also using the online platform ‘Eco-Tool’ for the first time, which supports us in assessing the ecological quality and calculates and correlates relevant parameters in the planning process.

Rückblick auf unser Podiumsgespräch im Klybeck Areal am 3. September 2024. Am 3. September 2024 fand im Klybeck Areal ein spannendes Podiumsgespräch statt, das sich mit der Frage beschäftigte, wie die Bauindustrie den Spagat zwischen politischem Mikromanagement und Europäisierung meistern kann. Gastgeberin auf dem Klybeck Areal war Anita Fetz, alt Ständerätin und Verwaltungsrätin der Rhystadt AG. Auf dem Podium waren Hans Peter Wessels, alt Regierungsrat Kanton Basel-Stadt, Gabriela Theus, Geschäftsführerin Immofonds Asset Management AG Zürich sowie Christian W. And yet, our analogue architecture library possesses a unique power of its own. As a tactile archive of architectural history and a source of inspiration for future thinking, it remains a constant presence in our studio – sometimes used more, sometimes less, but always accessible.
Under the title “TeckNow”, the former watch factory of Basis Watch M. Thommen AG will open its doors from 7 to 10 May 2026 and become a stage for design, art and music. At the centre of the exhibition is the furniture design of Werner Blaser (1924–2019). Selected pieces from the collections of Daniel Salzberg and Christian W. Blaser will be presented alongside models by contemporary manufacturers Spectrum Design, Molteni&C and Löffler ERGO. We are pleased to introduce our partners in more detail below.

Founded over 125 years ago, the Primeo Energie cooperative is headquartered in Münchenstein and reliably supplies over 180,000 households in Switzerland and France with energy. Under the motto ‘We bundle energy’, the infrastructure company focuses on the decarbonisation of the energy supply and offers intelligent, unique solutions in the areas of smart homes, sustainable mobility and energy efficiency. These are aimed at private and business customers as well as energy supply companies, cities and municipalities.
The topic of green roofs and biodiversity conservation in inner cities has gained increasing importance in recent years and is becoming a key component of sustainable urban planning. As an architectural practice, we regularly engage with this subject, for example through our work on the Stücki Park project on Hochbergstrasse. This provides good reason to take a closer look. In line with our credo “sharing experience,” we aim to gain deeper insights into why urban greening and bird conservation are so important and what role Basel plays in this context. We spoke with two experts on the subject. In the second part of the interview, we exchanged views with Dr. phil. Monika Schaub from the Department of Building Applications, Trees, and Plant Protection.
What actually is... amock-up?Sketches, drawings,floor plans, 3D models - the language used by architectural designers tocommunicate visually is not always easy to understand right away in reality -after all, visualizations often only offer a perspective view and plans, gridsand the like must also be able to be read. In Liesberg, we are currently realising a residential building that deliberately leverages the complex conditions of its hillside location. Our new blog format REVISITED takes a retrospective look at completed projects, offering an assessment of architecture as it is lived over time. We begin with a single-family home in Witterswil, completed in 2012. Situated at the edge of the building zone, the one-storey residence was realised as a densification of an existing plot and includes, in addition to the customary living areas, a slightly recessed studio space. The house was originally occupied by a couple to whom we have returned for a visit 13 years after their move-in.

A large part of our work today is digital and virtual—we design with CAD, enhance plans with BIM data, and visualize projects in 3D. Still, sometimes the tried and true methods prove their worth. Take model making, for example, which continues to play a significant role in architecture. Surprisingly, this might seem counterintuitive given the indispensable tools like 3D renderings and simulations, making physical model making appear almost outdated.
