Architecture and science – two fields that go hand in hand in the Basel region. These aspects are skillfully intertwined on the MAIN CAMPUS of the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area in Allschwil. This life sciences and innovation ecosystem, developed over the past few years near the French border on behalf of Senn Resources AG, offers an attractive and highly interconnected home for companies and institutions ranging from startups to multinational corporations.
Spread across multiple building complexes, these organizations can further develop their products and business areas in collaboration with academic and private-sector partners.
At the heart of this ecosystem is the MAIN CAMPUS HQ building. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, this space is home to many biotech startups for which we have already had the privilege of carrying out interior construction work.
Adjacent to it, a new building is now being constructed by SENN and Herzog & de Meuron, setting new benchmarks in sustainability. The House of Research, Technology, Utopia, and Sustainability, or HORTUS, embodies innovation and ecological responsibility, aiming to become energy-positive within 30 years of its completion. By then, all the energy expended in constructing the building should have been offset. This ambitious goal is supported by sustainable construction methods using materials such as wood, clay, and recycled paper, as well as the installation of an extensive photovoltaic system.
HORTUS is also designed with a circular economy in mind: all building components are engineered for reuse, minimizing the environmental footprint. Transportation distances are kept deliberately short – for example, much of the clay used for ceiling elements is sourced from on-site excavation, while other materials are procured from the surrounding region.
The building also features a green inner courtyard and communal spaces designed to foster agile exchanges among tenants. In this context, the name HORTUS is particularly fitting, as it means "garden" in Latin.
We are thrilled to be part of this exciting project and to contribute to the interior development of the coworking space on the first floor of HORTUS. The plan includes a mix of larger and smaller rental units spread over approximately 1,000 square meters, integrating flexible workspaces, networking opportunities, and community-building elements. Modern amenities such as a kitchen, technical facilities, and quiet zones for employees will also be included. At the same time, the design will create a creative, inviting atmosphere that promotes both productivity and well-being. Balancing functionality and professionalism with narrative office design is our primary goal.
The opening of HORTUS is scheduled for June 2025, and we are already working at full speed with all stakeholders in close collaboration. Our concept: to embrace the Herzog & de Meuron architectural vision – characterized by the use of wood and bright, friendly tones – while deliberately introducing accents that provide a harmonious contrast. The result will be a cohesive environment where work and well-being coexist effortlessly.

Efficient, cost-effective and high-quality: our new-build project in Basel/Binningen with prefabricated façade elements. What convinced us... We are currently working on the construction of a new apartment block (MFH) in Basel/Binningen, where we are in the middle of the shell construction and suggested a kind of modular system to the client, more precisely the use of prefabricated façade elements.
We decided to work with ERNE AG Holzbau, which specialises in prefabricated façade systems. Together, we developed a combination of reinforced concrete ceilings with steel columns and non-load-bearing façade elements for our project. The following advantages drove us to pursue this concept:
A key benefit is the time factor: prefabricated façade elements are manufactured in the factory and can then be assembled on site, which significantly reduces the overall construction time. In addition, you are less dependent on favourable weather conditions, as it is more difficult to work in hail, snow or 35 degrees than under weather-independent conditions in the production hall, where the right tools, materials and expertise are always immediately available.
Pinterest, digital mood boards, Instagram, ChatGPT and other AI-powered research tools – the number of digital information platforms is vast, and they’ve become an integral part of our daily workflow.
And yet, our analogue architecture library possesses a unique power of its own. As a tactile archive of architectural history and a source of inspiration for future thinking, it remains a constant presence in our studio – sometimes used more, sometimes less, but always accessible.
The topic of green roofs and biodiversity conservation in inner cities has gained increasing importance in recent years and is becoming a key component of sustainable urban planning. As an architectural practice, we regularly engage with this subject, for example through our work on the Stücki Park project on Hochbergstrasse. This provides good reason to take a closer look. In line with our credo “sharing experience,” we aim to gain deeper insights into why urban greening and bird conservation are so important and what role Basel plays in this context. We spoke with two experts on the subject. In the second part of the interview, we exchanged views with Dr. phil. Monika Schaub from the Department of Building Applications, Trees, and Plant Protection.
Under the title “TeckNow”, the former watch factory of Basis Watch M. Thommen AG will open its doors from 7 to 10 May 2026 and become a stage for design, art and music. At the centre of the exhibition is the furniture design of Werner Blaser (1924–2019). Selected pieces from the collections of Daniel Salzberg and Christian W. Blaser will be presented alongside models by contemporary manufacturers Spectrum Design, Molteni&C and Löffler ERGO. We are pleased to introduce our partners in more detail below.

… How Glazing Systems Sustainably Brighten Spaces In our projects, the use and integration of light always play a central role. Whether in offices, laboratories, or residential spaces, daylight is a crucial factor in both new construction and renovation projects. And for good reason—flooded with natural light, rooms not only create a pleasant atmosphere and a sense of spaciousness but also significantly impact energy efficiency and indoor climate. Last but not least, light and air have been proven to influence human psychology. In the following, we take a closer look at the key aspects of daylight planning from an architectural perspective and how the right glazing systems can enhance daylight supply in interior spaces.
Participation, collective ownership and self-governance – these three principles form the foundation of housing cooperatives. Unlike private real estate companies, the focus is not on maximising returns, but on the long-term preservation of housing, stable cost-covering rents and social responsibility.
