Farewell to Christian W. Blaser and a New Leadership Structure at Architektur Dialoge
Press Release. After 20 years at the helm of the Board of Trustees of Architektur Dialoge, Christian W. Blaser has stepped down as President. With the transition to a rotational chairmanship within the board, the foundation is reorganising its structure while continuing its established event series and maintaining a focus on the foundation’s future development.

Christian W. Blaser was honoured after 20 years of service as President of the Board of Trustees of Architektur Dialoge in the Doktor-Alban-Saal of CMS. The foundation traces its origins to an initiative by his father, architect and architecture mediator Werner Blaser, who decades earlier had launched projects promoting building culture and organised international architecture lectures. In 2006, Christian W. Blaser, together with others, formalised this initiative into the foundation and has since significantly shaped it as co-founder, Board President and curator. Since its founding in 2006, Architektur Dialoge has been mediating contemporary architecture in and around Basel.
Christian W. Blaser stated: “Architektur Dialoge thrives on collective thinking and organising, on dialogue and the open exchange of all those involved in shaping space. I am delighted that the foundation will continue on this path – with new perspectives and shared responsibility.”
The event series curated by Christian W. Blaser, including "Making of", "Exklusiv" and "Architecture Lectures", will continue.
Continuation in a New Structure The Architektur Dialoge Foundation will now be led collectively, with a formal chairmanship rotating every two years within the Board of Trustees. This leadership model strengthens shared responsibility and opens up multiple perspectives. The current Board members are: Esther Baur (architect and architecture mediator), Judith Bertram-Kaufmann (architect and architectural historian), Céline Dietziker (architect), Alexander Felix (architect and publisher), Lukas Manz (architect), Dr. Christoph Nertz (lawyer and notary), Lars Uellendahl (landscape architect), and Anne Marie Wagner (architect).
The chair for the 2026/27 term will be held by architect and architecture mediator Esther Baur, a Board member since 2018. Further information on the Board of Trustees is available on the foundation’s website.
About Architektur Dialoge Since 2006, the Architektur Dialoge Foundation Basel has been promoting contemporary architecture and fostering dialogue on building culture. Each year, it organises around 25 events, including lectures, panel discussions and guided tours, all of which are free to attend. On 28 May 2026, the foundation will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a jubilee event.

In the heart of the Gotthard massif lies the small village of Andermatt, which despite its striking location remained untouched by tourism for a long time. Thanks to a comprehensive tourism initiative by the major Egyptian-Montenegrin investor and developer Samih Sawiris, this has now changed and Andermatt has become an attractive destination for winter and summer visitors. We were also involved in this project and, as architect and general planner, have been responsible for getting the largest flat block there, Haus YARA, off the ground in recent months. Our guiding principle for this project was to combine tradition and modernity in order to create a harmonious whole between contemporary living and traditional architecture. MINERGIE certification, which was officially awarded the week before last, is also part of the concept.
Participation, collective ownership and self-governance – these three principles form the foundation of housing cooperatives. Unlike private real estate companies, the focus is not on maximising returns, but on the long-term preservation of housing, stable cost-covering rents and social responsibility.
Pinterest, digital mood boards, Instagram, ChatGPT and other AI-powered research tools – the number of digital information platforms is vast, and they’ve become an integral part of our daily workflow.
And yet, our analogue architecture library possesses a unique power of its own. As a tactile archive of architectural history and a source of inspiration for future thinking, it remains a constant presence in our studio – sometimes used more, sometimes less, but always accessible.
Founded in 1993, our office can now look back on a career spanning more than 30 years. 30 years in which we have been able to implement a large number of exciting projects, gain experience and, last but not least, continuously develop ourselves. What has remained the same is the passion for our profession and the unconditional thirst for knowledge and the will to share it, because more than ever we believe that it is not about preserving know-how and experience, but about sharing and passing it on - this is the only way to create mutual exchange, progress and participation. Our company claim “sharing experience” is intended to fulfill this desire and is part of our relaunch, which we implemented on the occasion of our 30th company anniversary...
Our new blog format REVISITED takes a retrospective look at completed projects, offering an assessment of architecture as it is lived over time. We begin with a single-family home in Witterswil, completed in 2012. Situated at the edge of the building zone, the one-storey residence was realised as a densification of an existing plot and includes, in addition to the customary living areas, a slightly recessed studio space. The house was originally occupied by a couple to whom we have returned for a visit 13 years after their move-in.
The topic of green roofs and biodiversity conservation in inner cities has gained increasing importance in recent years and is becoming a key component of sustainable urban planning. As an architectural practice, we regularly engage with this subject, for example through our work on the Stücki Park project on Hochbergstrasse. This provides good reason to take a closer look. In line with our credo “sharing experience,” we aim to gain deeper insights into why urban greening and bird conservation are so important and what role Basel plays in this context. We spoke with two experts on the subject. In the second part of the interview, we exchanged views with Dr. phil. Monika Schaub from the Department of Building Applications, Trees, and Plant Protection.

Efficient, cost-effective and high-quality: our new-build project in Basel/Binningen with prefabricated façade elements. What convinced us... We are currently working on the construction of a new apartment block (MFH) in Basel/Binningen, where we are in the middle of the shell construction and suggested a kind of modular system to the client, more precisely the use of prefabricated façade elements.
We decided to work with ERNE AG Holzbau, which specialises in prefabricated façade systems. Together, we developed a combination of reinforced concrete ceilings with steel columns and non-load-bearing façade elements for our project. The following advantages drove us to pursue this concept:
A key benefit is the time factor: prefabricated façade elements are manufactured in the factory and can then be assembled on site, which significantly reduces the overall construction time. In addition, you are less dependent on favourable weather conditions, as it is more difficult to work in hail, snow or 35 degrees than under weather-independent conditions in the production hall, where the right tools, materials and expertise are always immediately available.
Founded in 2006, the non-profit foundation Architektur Dialoge (AD) aims to raise public awareness about architecture and urban issues while fostering dialogue between the industry and private users. To achieve this, Architektur Dialoge offers a wide range of events on architecture and building culture, inviting the public to learn more through lectures, guided tours, and workshops. A large part of our work today is digital and virtual—we design with CAD, enhance plans with BIM data, and visualize projects in 3D. Still, sometimes the tried and true methods prove their worth. Take model making, for example, which continues to play a significant role in architecture. Surprisingly, this might seem counterintuitive given the indispensable tools like 3D renderings and simulations, making physical model making appear almost outdated. However, as in life, the magic often lies in the mix: combining digital and analog methods unlocks unique potential. Why Analog When Everything Is Digital?
