Office work is relatively recent in world history and has developed considerably since the Second World War. It was characterised above all by industrial development and technological achievements. The typewriter, the computer and the mobile phone have changed office work and the workplace. Each of these forms had its own space and furniture.
Today, the workplace is a tool and no longer a status symbol. Hierarchical cubicle offices do not meet the requirements of the new way of working. The workplace and space influence and define individual and team productivity as well as employee satisfaction, quality of working life and learning. A well-designed working environment can integrate different forms of workplace and space utilisation.
The more open an office workplace environment is, the greater the work effectiveness, provided that communication and interaction are important components of the work. There are few, if any, activities and office areas that do not fulfil this requirement. The diversity of open-space offices is great and their perception also depends on the age structure and origin of the employees: until now, most people have favoured cubicle offices for reasons of concentration, interruption, distraction and noise problems. Employees say that they need time and space to think, concentrate and reflect, but also to communicate, share information and interact socially. The trick is to find the golden mean.
The more open the working environment, the shorter the length of communication. Ongoing communication is not seen as a disruption, but as an opportunity for quick feedback, which means faster progress in work and education. Socialising binds teams together and promotes a culture of questioning and learning. Informal, unplanned learning is encouraged as a by-product of seeing, hearing and sensing how others solve a problem or master a situation.
As architectural designers of working environments, it is always important for us to have the knowledge, awareness and perception of the work being done and a courageous management decision in favour of open working. During implementation, it is important to accompany the process and implement change management if necessary. Open-spaces are flexible in terms of change and adaptation. After reviewing the processes, strengths and problems, adjustments can easily be made based on lessons learnt or internal developments.
I see the future of the working world in the ongoing evolution of communication technology and the merging of IT, as well as in location-independence. Fewer people will do more work and have the need to exchange ideas in person in open-space offices. However, communicative office landscapes will only work if people are on site...

How are lighting fixtures created that go far beyond their function as sources of light and become an extension of a space’s architecture? In conversation with the founders of PrintYourLight, we discuss the influence of architecture, nature, and co-design on their work, the possibilities of 3D printing, and the role of light as an identity-defining element of design.
Sustainability in the construction industry is one of the key challenges of our time, while also offering significant opportunities to shape the built environment responsibly and with a long-term perspective. It is a topic that we engage with every day. Whether working on private or commercial developments, small-scale interventions or large, complex projects, the many dimensions of sustainability are an integral part of our planning process and influence a wide range of project tasks. They continue to shape the way we design, plan and build.
Under the title “TeckNow”, the former watch factory of Basis Watch M. Thommen AG will open its doors from 7 to 10 May 2026 and become a stage for design, art and music. At the centre of the exhibition is the furniture design of Werner Blaser (1924–2019). Selected pieces from the collections of Daniel Salzberg and Christian W. Blaser will be presented alongside models by contemporary manufacturers Spectrum Design, Molteni&C and Löffler ERGO. We are pleased to introduce our partners in more detail below.
The topic of green roofs and biodiversity conservation in inner cities has gained increasing importance in recent years and is becoming a key component of sustainable urban planning. As an architectural practice, we regularly engage with this subject, for example through our work on the Stücki Park project on Hochbergstrasse. This provides good reason to take a closer look. In line with our credo “sharing experience,” we aim to gain deeper insights into why urban greening and bird conservation are so important and what role Basel plays in this context. We spoke with two experts on the subject. In the second part of the interview, we exchanged views with Dr. phil. Monika Schaub from the Department of Building Applications, Trees, and Plant Protection.

Gastgeberin auf dem Klybeck Areal war Anita Fetz, alt Ständerätin und Verwaltungsrätin der Rhystadt AG. Auf dem Podium waren Hans Peter Wessels, alt Regierungsrat Kanton Basel-Stadt, Gabriela Theus, Geschäftsführerin Immofonds Asset Management AG Zürich sowie Christian W. Blaser, Blaser Architekten Basel. Moderiert wurde das Podium von Manuel Hutter, Verwaltungsrat der Kontur Projektmanagement AG. Our new blog format REVISITED takes a retrospective look at completed projects, offering an assessment of architecture as it is lived over time. We begin with a single-family home in Witterswil, completed in 2012. Situated at the edge of the building zone, the one-storey residence was realised as a densification of an existing plot and includes, in addition to the customary living areas, a slightly recessed studio space. The house was originally occupied by a couple to whom we have returned for a visit 13 years after their move-in.
Founded in 2006, the non-profit foundation Architektur Dialoge (AD) aims to raise public awareness about architecture and urban issues while fostering dialogue between the industry and private users. To achieve this, Architektur Dialoge offers a wide range of events on architecture and building culture, inviting the public to learn more through lectures, guided tours, and workshops.
