To enable the former Engelsaal to operate in a contemporary manner following its acquisition by the city of Liestal, the hall has undergone comprehensive renovations since August. Key upgrades include a separate entrance area with a new canopy, an evening box office with cloakroom, the installation of a catering kitchen and bar, as well as the modernisation of media and stage technology. After just a few months of renovation, Stadtsaal Liestal now shines in a new light and reopens its doors to a wide range of events and celebrations. We supported the project as planners and in construction management, providing external specialist planning for HVAC, sanitary, and electrical systems.

The Naubrücke in Laufen is currently the subject of debate. A possible relocation is being discussed, which supporters justify with the bundling of road and rail traffic. This, they argue, would create the opportunity to establish a cohesive recreational and leisure area, while also enabling complementary uses in the fields of housing, work, recreation, and leisure. The canton, the municipality, and all political parties support the new route. Opponents, on the other hand, argue that complex engineering structures and additional construction would lead to significantly higher costs. According to them, the improvement of school route safety cited by supporters could also be achieved without relocation; a tunnel under the railway at the football field would be sufficient.

The president of the referendum committee and their supporters, who oppose the relocation, also fear that the canton is primarily aiming to relieve the town centre without providing Laufen with any real added value. Detailed information on the topic can also be found in last week’s article by the Basler Zeitung.

The vote on the planned project will take place on 30 November. We are already voting internally today – of course, voluntarily and anonymously. Anyone who wishes to participate can do so by simply clicking the link below…

PS: If the referendum is rejected, i.e., in the event that the Naubrücke is relocated, Blaser Architekten, as part of the ARX Group SA team, would take on the architectural services, which – subject to a positive vote – have already been committed.

Together with strong partners by our side, we participated in the Industrienacht for the first time this year. We will be taking part again next year and are already looking forward to the preparations and to Friday, 24 April 2026.

Earliest from 2029 onward, the main building of the Kunstmuseum will undergo comprehensive renovation and remain closed for the duration of the construction period. For the departments and staff whose offices are located in the main building, temporary facilities will be provided at St. Alban-Vorstadt and in the harbour. These include the restoration department, the studios and offices of Education & Mediation, the Provenance Research Department, and the entire Prints and Drawings Collection.

As general planner, we were responsible for the planning and implementation of this special-use phase, aiming to create functional, safe and welcoming work and meeting environments that can be used meaningfully and sustainably beyond the construction period. The designated locations offer space for a wide range of temporary uses, from restoration workshops to studio spaces for art courses provided by Education & Mediation.

Our comprehensive service study for the new construction of the Spiez Laboratory, combined with the renovation of the highly toxic building, workshop building, and energy center, underscores our commitment to technical excellence and sustainable architecture. We emphasize the integration of cutting-edge technologies and sustainable building practices to maximize the functionality and efficiency of these critical research and development sites. Our approach includes thorough planning strategies that address both the specific requirements of these specialized structures and environmental compatibility. We look forward to making a forward-thinking contribution to this project.

With the future traffic management, road and rail traffic will be consolidated near the railway embankment. This will notably alleviate noise for areas such as the Lochfeld neighborhood or the front Norimatt. Overall, the traffic situation in Laufen will improve as motorized traffic is separated from pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Additionally, the new Eishalle underpass will establish a direct connection for non-motorized traffic, linking neighborhoods south of the railway embankment with the Eishalle and Stedtli Laufen. This enhances traffic safety for everyone and creates an attractive and secure network of paths for pedestrians and cyclists.

The consolidation of infrastructure in the Nau area will result in a traffic-calmed, cohesive open and green space. Specifically, the area between the slaughterhouse and the Eishalle will be available to the population of Laufen as an attractive, centrally located open space for local recreation, leisure, and sports. A public participation process was conducted for the project and variant decision.

We look forward to the possibility of working on this project in collaboration with the Arx Group at Aeschenplatz in Basel and the entire general planning team.

On the Main Campus of the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area, the new Skills Lab and Simulation Center of the University Hospital Basel is taking shape – a pioneering learning environment equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology, ideally located in direct proximity to industry partners and life science start-ups. We are delighted to be realising this innovative project together with the USB team and to have the opportunity to support its development.

We are pleased to welcome three new team members: Andreas Rumpel (ZFA & BIM), Fabio Rudin (ZFA), and Marc Eyacher (Architect). We look forward to a successful collaboration and are excited about the projects that lie ahead.

With over thirty years of experience, we now draw on a well-established network. Whether involving specialist planners, clients, or colleagues from other architectural firms, exchanging knowledge, experience, and ideas is a core aspect of our work and is reflected in our company credo, SHARING EXPERIENCE. One of our longstanding project partners is the architectural firm Butscher, with whom we have shared a partnership and office community at Austrasse 24 for twenty years.

This partnership began two decades ago when Novartis launched a general planning tender for various laboratory buildings on its campus. At that time, Blaser Architekten brought valuable experience in collaborating with renowned design architects from Japan, while Butscher Architekten contributed their expertise in large-scale project planning. Together, we successfully realized the Novartis building WSJ-155 on Fabrikstrasse from 2005 to 2009, under the leadership of the Japanese design architect Yoshio Taniguchi.

This partnership grew into a long-term office and working relationship that continues to thrive through several projects today, such as the Virchow 16, a laboratory and office building on the Novartis Campus, developed in collaboration with Indian design architect Rahul Mehrotra. These local architecture mandates demanded close coordination and prompted joint trips to Japan and India. Another joint venture included the renovation and conversion of Novartis's largest existing building, WSJ 386, as well as the planning of the Friedrich Miescher Institute, which was later occupied by Novartis oncologists.

Currently, we are embarking on a new collaboration, focusing on the large-scale planning of a hospital and the fit-out of a Privée station for the Hirslanden Group. We cherish this enduring partnership, which consistently brings us together and allows each party to contribute their unique expertise.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming architecture by autonomously conducting analyses, visualizations, and cost calculations, as well as creating texts, images, and floor plans. However, the creative expertise of architects remains essential. AI supports planners and architects in fostering innovative ideas but does not take over the detailed creation of executable construction plans. Although AI in architecture is still in its early stages, it already offers a variety of possibilities. The focus is on understanding AI as an additional tool that processes vast amounts of data, while true innovation remains a human endeavor. It is crucial to carefully examine and understand the impacts, opportunities, and challenges of AI in spatial planning.

Maintenance work that has become necessary is now being undertaken by Blaser Architects. This encompasses several properties of the Hirsacker Foundation, particularly the "Riederwald" residential building and the "Hirsacker" area. A first sub-project has already been completed, with other works still pending.

Art Exhibition: SCENT OF ART – When scent becomes art

Born from a spontaneous moment of shared curiosity, an interdisciplinary project has emerged: artists, an architect, designers, a photographer and perfumer Joschka Klee combine their expertise to create a sensory art experience.

At the heart of the project lies the interplay between space, light, art and scent. Klee’s specially composed fragrances Canvas and Creation unfold at various locations in Basel before merging into an olfactory artwork in Schauraum B – the scent of art.

This immersive installation is shaped by artworks from international artists, brought together in a large-scale exhibition at Schauraum B.

In the popular Bachletten district, just a few minutes' walk from Pauluskirche and Spalentor, lies Weiherweg. Directly across from Schützenmattpark, we had the opportunity to carry out the core refurbishment of a charming five-and-a-half-room apartment on the eighth floor of a high-rise building from the 1950s. Having significantly aged over the years, the apartment combined design elements from the 1950s and 1980s. After a renovation period of just over six months, the apartment now shines in new splendor, offering a panoramic view over Basel. Please find more informations here.

Last week, we were involved in assembling the pedestrian bridge on the Viollier AG campus, where employees will soon be able to move effortlessly from one building to another. Even though construction and renovations are our daily business, a pedestrian bridge is always something special, requiring millimeter-precise work. It’s a fascinating spectacle when five-ton steel beams are placed with absolute precision. Check out the drone footage here...

Revisited: What is life like 13 years after moving in?

Our new blog format REVISITED takes a retrospective look at completed projects, offering an assessment of architecture as it is lived over time. We begin with a single-family home in Witterswil, completed in 2012. Situated at the edge of the building zone, the one-storey residence was realised as a densification of an existing plot and includes, in addition to the customary living areas, a slightly recessed studio space. The house was originally occupied by a couple to whom we have returned for a visit 13 years after their move-in.
