As part of the City of Liestal’s acquisition of the former Engelsaal, our office was commissioned to accompany the re-conceptualisation and refurbishment of the Stadtsaal. The objective of the project was to adapt the spatial programme of the existing hall both structurally and functionally to the new usage concept, while simultaneously establishing new structures enabling independent operation.
A central element of the refurbishment concept is the newly created entrance area. It is now organised independently from the adjacent hotel entrance and is clearly legible through a new canopy with its own signage. From here, visitors are welcomed via a forecourt cloakroom area, which also functions as an evening box office and structures access to the hall.
The interior of the 518-square-metre hall has been carefully upgraded and functionally enhanced. In the rear area, a newly designed, separately enclosed preparation kitchen has been integrated. In front of this, a new bar counter with a contemporary timber frontage has been inserted into the spatial structure, fitting seamlessly into the existing fabric and enabling versatile use for receptions, apéritifs, and events.
A further focus was placed on the renewal of media, safety, and stage technology in order to ensure contemporary use across a wide range of event formats. Following a short construction period, the Stadtsaal Liestal now presents itself in renewed clarity – as a flexible, contemporary venue for a broad spectrum of cultural and social events in the municipality of Liestal, which has a population of 16’034.
