The history of the Teatro and Kursaal Locarno is marked by transformation and a challenging coexistence. Since the original design by Bernasconi and Franzoni in 1902, numerous renovations and extensions have taken place over time. As a result, the building has evolved into a complex structure featuring a variety of styles. The dual functions – theatre and casino – emphasise this sense of heterogeneity.
With the planned renovation and extension, the aim is now to create a harmonious and architecturally unified whole that appropriately honours Locarno’s cultural and urban life. Together with our colleagues at STUDIOPEZ, we participated in the competition for the renovation and extension, submitting a design that divides the building into two clearly defined entities – one dedicated to the theatre, the other to the casino.
The casino appears as an elegant glass-ceramic box in dialogue with the historic theatre, connected by an arcade. Despite this clear division, the design achieves a balanced overall composition in which contemporary, functional, and historical architecture blend harmoniously. This is further enhanced through the reconstruction of original structural elements and the deliberate exposure of historical fabric.
Functional concept – cohesion through clear separation
The basement connects both functions and accommodates gaming rooms and the kitchen; a patio supplies the offices and restaurant areas with natural light and ventilation. Theatre, casino, and restaurant are functionally separated yet interconnected through the new foyer and a central staircase, allowing flexible access to all levels. The roof serves as a terrace, offering an additional event and experience space with panoramic views over Locarno.
Façade and arcade – expression of identity and connection
The theatre is being restored and partially reinterpreted in an abstract way; the historical substance is preserved and energetically upgraded.
