Freie Strasse residential and commercial building

The residential and commercial building is situated in an attractive location at Freie Strasse 51, in Basel's main shopping street, where international labels and exquisite boutiques line up side by side. In the course of the remodelling of the entire property, a new division of the building's use presented itself in response to the changing retail and residential market.

The lower three floors are to remain retail and were occupied by the fashion label Massimo Dutti. Six flats in the upper price segment have been created on the top three floors. The flats are characterised by open-plan layouts with spacious dining and living areas. The two flats on the upper floors facing the courtyard and the cathedral were designed as maisonettes. The top floor, located in the sloping roof, is connected to the bright living spaces below via a gallery. All flats blend individually into the existing building fabric and have become a jewel in the urban environment. A spacious roof terrace, accessible to the entire building, emphasises the attractive residential location. Blaser Architekten planned the basic fit-out on the retail floors and the interior fit-out on the upper four floors.
