Market hall

The market hall has been opened up and made accessible to the general public. Permeability and connections to the city centre are new: the entrance on Viaduktstrasse has been uncovered - on Steinentorberg, a generous cascading staircase opens up the domed hall, strengthens the axis to the railway station and places the market hall in a larger urban context. The market hall was powerfully accentuated and made visible and tangible through interior and exterior lighting. The area under the dome remains free for a wide variety of events. Municipal, private, charitable and commercial events are planned, e.g. in the sports and cultural sector. A covered 'Allmend' of around 1,000 square metres is a unique and unprecedented opportunity for Basel.

The event area is surrounded by small-scale, high-quality catering, retail and service areas. The utilisation concept is complemented by large-format shops in the basement. Leisure, entertainment and nightlife offerings occupy the market hall around the clock. The peripheral buildings were refurbished and continue to serve as office space. The refurbishment and extension of the market hall ensemble was planned and realised in close consultation with the conservation authorities. The high-rise building was designed by the architects Diener&Diener Architekten.
