The client, the municipality of Riehen, took the expiry of a tenancy agreement in February 2011 as an opportunity to renovate and extend the country inn, which is well-positioned in Riehen. The building ensemble consisting of the main and transverse wings was technically refitted, optimised in terms of energy efficiency and - following the demolition of an aesthetically and functionally unsatisfactory later extension - expanded to include a new, higher-quality restaurant. The building is located in the conservation zone (preservation of scale and building cube as well as preservation of the outwardly visible historical and artistic character of the building). The new restaurant building docks onto the kitchen wing and is separated from it in the roof area by a strip of skylights that provides light and lightness. A newly designed, spacious access zone with a vestibule in front and an enlarged hotel lobby attached connects the front and rear terraces on one level. All important areas of the country inn can be accessed via this area. In addition, the access and escape route situation was improved, the kitchen delivery area was relocated, including a goods lift, and various other measures were implemented to optimise operations.
